Dr. Emilee Coulter-Thompson, DrPH, LMSW (she/her) is the Managing Director of the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine (CBSSM) at the University of Michigan. A public health social worker, Emilee co-leads Michigan Medicine’s LGBTQ+ Health Advisory Committee and has advanced health equity in community settings, state government public health, and academic medicine for more than two decades. At Michigan Medicine she previously worked with the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation and the Department of Learning Health Sciences in the Medical School.
Prior to joining Michigan Medicine in 2016, Emilee served as deputy to the director of the Oregon Health Authority Transformation Center, the hub of innovation and quality improvement for Oregon’s health system transformation, where she led learning collaboratives with Medicaid Coordinated Care Organizations (CCOs), Medicaid Community Advisory Council members, clinicians, payers and health equity leaders. She also designed and directed an interprofessional leadership development program. With the State of Oregon from 2006-2016, she worked to improve the public’s health in various areas, including women’s health, violence prevention, family planning, HIV, and performance management. In addition, Emilee has advocated for survivors of sexual and domestic violence with state and local nonprofit organizations in Ohio, Michigan, and Oregon.
Emilee earned her Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and published her dissertation research on the impact of health discrimination against LGBTQ parents on the screening and diagnosis of their children with developmental disabilities. Emilee has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Women’s Studies from Miami University (Ohio) and a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan. Emilee enjoys kayaking, meditation, and spending time on the Oregon coast with her wife and two children.
