Are We (Unfairly) Biased in Tolerating and Forgiving Human Errors Over AI Errors?

Abstract: The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked debates surrounding the tolerance and forgiveness of errors committed by both humans and machines. Despite evidence suggesting the superior reliability of AI systems compared to human agents in various domains, there exists a notable asymmetry in societal attitudes toward errors. While humans often receive leniency and forgiveness for their mistakes, AI errors are met with zero-tolerance policies. This phenomenon prompts an inquiry into whether such biases reflect a fundamental discrepancy in the way errors are perceived.
I argue that even if we are indeed biased in the differential treatment of human and AI errors, it is well grounded in our humanity. The underlying rationale lies not in a biased evaluation but in the trust endowed upon humans based on shared experiences and acknowledgment of mutual imperfections. We are predisposed to tolerate and forgive errors committed by our counterparts owing to a collective understanding of fallibility and a cultural emphasis on redemption and improvement.
Moreover, the tolerance and forgiveness towards human errors is not rooted in a comprehensive understanding of human cognition, but rather in an innate human tendency to empathize and trust fellow beings. As a result, the opacity of AI decision-making processes doesn’t explain our intolerance towards AI errors.
In conclusion, the differential treatment of human and AI errors stems from intrinsic human values rather than bias, underscoring the complex interplay between trust, imperfection, and societal attitudes toward technological advancements.
